Times are challenging but I strongly believe that life is made of seasons and that we all have what it takes to emerge from this situation better than we were.

During this trying time, we have come to recognize self-care as washing our hands and practicing social distancing. Whilst I take no importance away from these practices, I also feel that many have lost sight of what accompanies optimal physical, emotional, and mental health.

Self-care is defined as the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote, maintain health, prevent disease and to cope with illness with or without the support of a health care provider. Self-care encompasses several issues including hygiene, nutrition, lifestyle, environmental and socio-economic factors. Promotion of self-care is a means to empower individuals, families, and communities for informed health decision-making. It has the potential of improving the efficiency of health systems and contributing towards health equity.

To be able to lead, especially in times of uncertainty, we must first look after ourselves. We need to first give priority to our physical, emotional, and mental needs, then only can we be equipped enough to help others.

Self-care promotes:

  • A more sustainability life
  • Increased creativity and productivity
  • Higher self confidence
  • Ability to sustain better quality relationships
  • Increased energy

All this contributes to creating a balanced life.

As such, we should remember that it all starts with ourselves.
